The HiSET and GED Sub-exams
The HiSET, just like the GED test, measures knowledge at a level that compares to that of graduating high school seniors.
There are four separate, independent, modular GED sub-exams that measure an applicant’s proficiency in these subject fields:
- Reasoning through Language Arts
- Mathematical reasoning
- Science
- Social Studies
The HiSET has five sector tests in the fields of English writing, English reading, math, social studies, and science.
The GED is totally computer-based, while the HiSET is available on a computer and on paper.

GED Passing Score
On the computer-based GED exam, you must attain at least a 145 score on each sub-exam. Your results are measured on a 100-200 scale, and the scoring ranges are as follows:
- Below Passing Score: 100-144
- High School Equivalency Score: 145-164
- College-Ready Score: 165-174
- College-Ready + Credit Score: 175-200
HiSET Passing Score
On the HiSET exam, you need to come to at least an 8-point score (out of 20) on each of the five independent subject tests. Additionally, your essay score must be at least 2, and your total HiSET score cannot be less than 45, excluding your essay score.
Online GED and HiSET Testing
In the past, there was no way you could take the HiSET or GED exam over the Internet.
We have seen some significant developments, though, and now, you can also sit for the HiSET or GED exam online. A proctor supports you with the test-taking process and checks if everything goes according to the rules.
More information about the online HiSET exam is found here: Introducing the online HiSET test.
For more information on the OP (Online Proctored) GED test, check out this page.
If you want to take the GED exam online, note that you first must reach ‘green’ results on the official practice test, GED Ready, by GED Testing Service.
This counts for all four GED subtests, so that’s four practice tests in total. Since each GED Ready test is $7.99, you can add another $32 to your overall Missouri GED costs.
Free GED Ready Tests
If you use an Advantage Plan from Onsego for your preparation, there’s no need to purchase any GED Ready practice tests, because the plans come with four GED Ready vouchers at no additional cost, a great $32 value bonus.
Advantage Plans from Onsego are actually very affordable. There’s already a plan available for $79 (the 6-month full-access option), and this plan also includes four free GED Ready vouchers, on top of more free extras.
Are adjustments needed? Should we add or unlist a site? Please inform us here.
