The GED has four separate subtests that may be completed one test at a time. The tests are in
- Science
- English Language Literacy
- Social Studies
- Mathematics
The HiSET has five subtests that are also modular. The Literacy section has separate writing and reading tests.

The Online HiSET and GED Tests
Until recently, online HiSET or GED testing was not possible. If you wished to secure your North Carolina high school equivalency degree, you had to come, in person, to a state-designated testing site.
Now, with the arrival of online proctored GED and HiSET testing, that has all changed. If you want to learn more about the online GED test-taking option, visit this article: Introducing the online GED test, and if you want to read more about online HiSET testing, check out Introducing the online HiSET exam.
