What’s on the HiSET and GED Tests?
Both assessments measure proficiency at a level that compares to what high school seniors are expected to command upon graduation.
The GED has four separate, modular subtests that may be completed one at a time and in your chosen order. The tests are in
- Science
- English Language Literacy
- Social Studies
- Mathematics
The HiSET has five subtests that are also modular. The Literacy section has separate writing and reading tests.
The HiSET exam is available in both paper-based and computerized versions, whereas the GED must be taken entirely on a computer.

Four Timed GED Tests
The total time for the GED test (the whole battery of 4 modules) is about 7.5 hours, and the time available for each subject is as follows:
- Language Arts (English Language Literacy): 150 minutes
- Mathematics: 115 minutes
- Science: 90 minutes
- Social Studies: 70 minutes
You can take the four modules one (or more) at a time and in your desired order.
The Online HiSET and GED Tests
In earlier days, online HiSET or GED testing was not possible. If you wished to secure your North Carolina high school equivalency diploma, you had to come in person to a state-designated testing site.
However, a few years ago, we witnessed the arrival of online proctored GED and HiSET testing, so that has all changed.
To learn more about the online GED test, visit this article: Introducing the online GED test.
If you want to read more about online HiSET testing, check out: Introducing the online HiSET exam.
Please note that you only take the GED test online if you first have reached sufficient results (“green” scores) on the GED Ready practice test.
There’s a practice test for each individual GED subtest, so that’s four overall for an extra cost of $32 ($7.99 per test).
Free GED Ready Vouchers
If you use one of the Advantage Plans by Onsego to get all set for your GED test, you won’t need to buy anything! Your plan includes four GED Ready Vouchers at no charge, saving you $32.
All Advantage Plans from Onsego include immediate access to all lessons and materials, multiple highly effective support programs, and four free GED Ready vouchers.
There is already an Advantage Plan for $79 (including the free GED Ready vouchers, a $32 bonus), a 6-month program that will help you pass the exam super-fast.
