The exams assess elementary knowledge at a level comparable to that of graduating high school seniors.
The GED exam has four individual modular subtests that assess a student’s skills and knowledge of these subject areas:
- Math
- Science
- English Language Literacy
- Social Studies
You may take these sub-exams separately and in the order you want.
The HiSET has five modular tests. The Language Literacy section includes separate reading and writing tests.

That has now changed with the introduction of online proctored HiSET and GED tests. Read more at the bottom of this page.

Introducing GED and HiSET Online Testing
In the past, online HiSET or GED testing was not offered online. To secure your North Carolina HSE diploma, your personal appearance at an official North Carolina HSE testing center was required.
Now, however, the arrival of online GED and HiSET test-taking options has changed all of this. To read more about these new online options, check for the GED exam: Introducing the online GED test. For more information about the online HiSET test, go to The online HiSET test.
