What’s on the GED and HiSET Exams
The GED contains four individual subsets in
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
- Language Arts
These modules can be taken one at a time and in the order you prefer.
The HiSET contains five subtests (English Language Literacy has separate reading and writing tests) that can also be taken separately.
Both tests measure skills at a level that’s also expected of high school seniors upon graduation.

Online GED and HiSET Testing
It used to be that you could not take the GED HiSET exam via the Internet. Your personal appearance at one of Mississippi’s state-approved test locations was required.
But some years back, the HiSET and the GED became available online as well.

To write the GED test online, you are first required to attain passing scores on the GED Ready test. In total, you need to pass four of these tests, since each GED subtest comes with a corresponding GED Ready practice test.
In total, the GED Ready tests will add $32 to your Mississippi testing cost, since they are $7.99 each.
