What is on the GED and HiSET Tests
There are four individual GED subtests covering the academic fields of
- English Language Literacy
- Social Studies
- Math
- Science
You may write these independent modules one at a time, in any order you prefer.
The HiSET exam has separate writing and reading subtests, so five overall. These tests can be taken separately as well.
Both exams assess general knowledge at a level comparable to that of graduating high school students.
The GED is administered exclusively on a computer, whereas the HiSET exam is available in both paper-based and computer-based formats.

The Online HiSET and GED Exams
Taking the GED or HiSET exam online was not possible until some years ago. To get your North Carolina GED diploma, you were required to come to a designated testing center.
A few years back, however, we saw the introduction of online formats for the HiSET and GED tests.
For more detailed information about the online GED test, check out this post: The online GED exam.
To learn more about the online HiSET exam, check out this post: The online HiSET test.
If you want to take the GED test online, you first must attain passing results (‘green’ scores) on the GED Ready test, the official practice test by GED Testing Service.
Since there’s one of these tests for each GED subtest, you’ll have to pass four GED Ready tests. They are $7.99 each on the GED.com website, for a total of $32 in addition to the regular testing fees.
FREE GED Ready Vouchers
Onsego students with an Advantage Plan don’t have to buy these practice tests because all Advantage Plans include four free GED Ready Vouchers, a fine $32 bonus.
Onsego’s Advantage Plans are already available for $79 (the 6-month plan), and all plans come with unlimited access to all GED classes from day one, lots of free additional courses, and four GED Ready vouchers!
