The GED exam offers persons who did not graduate high school the chance to obtain an equivalent diploma.

The exam measures knowledge at a level that compares to what students must command after four years in high school.

The GED exam comes with four separate subtests (modules) in these subject areas:

  • English Language Arts (reading and writing combined)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

This website offers GED online classes for free, so you can learn if an online course is a good fit to guide you toward your GED diploma. If so, we suggest you go further with Onsego Online GED Prep, an accredited full-scope program, and earn your GED fast.

You should also take some GED practice tests, which will allow you to identify which subject fields of the GED exam you should center on to improve your scores and learn more effectively.

You can take one (or more) of the four modules at a time and in any order you want.

The GED exam is fully computer-based. Paper-formatted testing belongs to the past, so basic computer skills are required as well.

Introducing the Online GED Exam

Sitting for the four GED subtests via the Internet is now a reality for qualifying test-takers. It used to be that test-takers needed to report in person to an official GED testing center to sit for Alabama’s high school equivalency test, but fortunately, that has now changed.

The GED test has become available online as well, using an online proctor who will oversee your test-taking process. For more information, go to this post: online GED testing.

One Test at a Time

You are not required to sit for the entire GED battery in one take. You have the option to take one (or more) of the four modules at a time. Many students take that subtest first, which they think is the easiest for them to build up their confidence.

If you take the GED test at a test center, you’ll get two retakes at a reduced rate. If you take the GED exam online, there are no discounted retakes.
