What’s on the GED and HiSET Exams

Both tests assess knowledge at a level similar to what students must master upon graduating from high school.

GED® testing includes four subtests measuring knowledge of:

  • Math
  • Science
  • English Language Arts
  • Social Studies

These modules can be completed separately and in any order.

The HiSET comes with individual reading and writing tests (so five overall) that can be taken separately as well.

The HiSET is available on paper and in a computerized format, while the GED is taken exclusively on a computer.

Online GED and HiSET Testing

Until some years back, the GED and HiSET exams had to be taken exclusively at state-approved testing sites. That has, fortunately, changed with the launch of online testing options for both the GED and the HiSET exams.

You can learn more about online proctored HiSET testing on this page: The HiSET-At-Home Exam.

Information about online GED testing is available here: Launching the online GED exam.

If you want to take the GED exam online, you must first achieve “green” results (passing scores) on the GED Ready official practice test from GED Testing Service.

There are four of these tests, one for each GED subtest, that cost $7.99 each on the GED.com website. So, that’s $32 in addition to the regular testing fees.

If you learn with an Onsego Advantage Plan, available from $79 for the 6-month plan, you’ll get four GED Ready Vouchers for free as part of your plan, a $32 bonus!
