GED Classes Bryan/College Station, Texas

This post lists all GED® prep classes and test centers in the Bryan/College Station region.

Texas is using several options for HSE (high school equivalency) testing, the GED, TASC, and HiSET.

HSE testing gives individuals that couldn’t graduate high school one more option to obtain an equivalent degree.

The HSE test assesses knowledge at a level comparable to that of graduating high school seniors.

The GED is fully computer-based whereas the HiSET and TASC exams are available in both computer-based and paper-based formats.

GED testing is done through four separate modules (or subtests) in Science, Social Studies, Literacy, and Math. These tests must be completed within two years.

The HiSET and TASC tests contain five tests (Literacy comes with individual reading and writing tests) that cannot be taken separately.

Online HSE testing is NOT possible. Test takers must appear in person at an official Texas HSE testing site.

How difficult is the GED test?

Test-taker eligibility

To be able to take the HSE exam in Texas, you need to be a Texas resident, not already possess a secondary education degree, and be 18 or older. For 16/17-year-old applicants, there are options too, but they must meet specific restrictions, so contact a GED prep location or testing center. You additionally cannot be signed up for another school program. To see if you qualify for the Texas HSE exam, visit GED testing requirements in Texas. Check out also this post that links to all GED testing facilities and classes in the US.

Required score

The latest edition of the GED exam was introduced in January 2014 and has a new scores range that goes from 100 to 200, and to earn a Texas GED Certificate (High School Equivalency Diploma), you needed to attain at least 150 points on each test. That now has changed to 145, so no less than 580 in total). You can read the full article here. TASC and HiSET have their own scoring systems.

Preparation is key

The new version of the GED exam is more rigorous than the former edition, and preparation is now more important than ever before. Probably the best option is to sign up with one of the above-listed courses, but for individuals living in remote portions of Texas, and also for those who are very busy, online courses can be a great alternative. GED study books are available at most community libraries and local bookstores. A fantastic source of information is also offered at the GED website GED.com, and this website also offers online GED classes and practice tests at no cost.

*) Bryan Adult Learning Center (BALC) presents one of the most impressive adult education programs in the Region VI ESC area, which includes 15 counties. The Adult Learning Center offers group instruction, individual tutoring, as well as computer-assisted education in basic literacy, ABE (Adult Basic Education), ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, and GED (General Education Development) prep classes for adult learners in the Brazos Valley area who are at least 17 years old, who don’t possess a high school diploma, and want to be working toward earning their HSE (high school equivalency) certificate.

The school works with small GED classes (max 25 students), and all applicants must go through an orientation and registration session. The school offers morning, afternoon and night classes at the ALC campus (1700 Palasota Drive). If you want more information, you can contact the Bryan Adult Learning Center at 979-209-7040.
