The HiSET® and GED® tests can be taken online and at certified test centers. To learn more about these online HiSET and GED testing options, check below at the bottom of this post.

The exams are for adults who don’t have a high school diploma and offer them the chance to earn an equivalent degree. The TASC exam was discontinued.

The GED test has four tests in

  • English Language Literacy
  • Social Studies
  • Math
  • Science

The GED is modular, meaning the subtests (modules) can be taken separately. No need to sit for all four GED modules in one take.

The HiSET has separate writing and reading tests, so five in total, that can also be taken separately.

New Jersey was actually the first U.S. state that allowed only computer-based testing for all offered alternatives. Paper-and-pencil testing is a thing of the past.

Passing Scores

The passing score for each individual GED subtest is 145. Averaging is not possible, so your total score needs to be at least 580.

The HiSET passing score is 8 (out of a possible 20) for each one of the five subject field tests, an essay score of at least 2 (out of 6), and no less than 45 points overall, not including your essay score.

Both exams are developed to help adults who, for whatever reason, never completed high school with obtaining a diploma that is comparable to a regular high school diploma.

So there are testing centers offering the HiSET exam (developed by ETS – Educational Testing Services, and now published by PSI) and sites that use the GED (developed by GED Testing Service), whereas others offer both options. Overall, the GED remains the most widely used High School Equivalency test in New Jersey.
