The Four Modular GED Subtests
The GED exam assesses knowledge and skills at a level expected of graduating high school seniors.
The computer-formatted GED (General Education Development) has four subtests measuring a test-taker’s knowledge of
- English Language Literacy
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
You can take one subtest (module) when you feel sufficiently prepared. No need to take the entire GED exam in one session.
In North Dakota, GED students must additionally pass a U.S. Civics exam.

Online GED Testing
In the past, if you wanted to sit for the GED test, there was no online option. You were always required to show up personally at one of North Dakota’s official GED testing sites if you were looking to earn your GED diploma.
Well, the arrival of the online GED option changed all that some years back. An online proctor will monitor your online testing activities and check that everything happens in accordance with the regulations.

To take the GED test online, you first are required to attain sufficient results (scores in the ‘green’ zone) on the GED Ready practice test from GED Testing Service.
There’s a GED Ready test for each of the four GED subtests, so that’s four of these practice tests that are available at GED.com for $7.99 apiece, adding $32 to your total North Dakota testing cost.
