The HiSET and GED Subtests
The GED includes four individual tests measuring a test-taker’s skills and knowledge of these subjects:
- Mathematics
- Social Studies
- English Language Literacy
- Science
You may write these sub-exams separately and in your desired order.
The HiSET exam has five subtests (individual Reading and Writing tests) that are available separately as well.
The HiSET is offered in both a paper-based and a computer-based format, while the GED must be taken entirely on a computer.

The Online HiSET and GED Exams
In the past, you could never take the HiSET or GED exam online. To get hold of your North Carolina high school equivalency credential, you were required to show up in person at an official North Carolina testing center.
With the launch of both GED and HiSET online tests a few years ago, that has changed.
If you want to get informed about the GED online test-taking option, visit “The online GED test.”
To learn more about online HiSET testing, check out this page: “Introducing the online HiSET exam.
To be able to take the GED exam online, you’ll first have to achieve sufficient results (in the ‘green’ zone) on the GED Ready test.
This is the official practice test by GED Testing Service, and the only test that can predict if you will pass the GED exam or if more preparation is required.
There is one GED Ready test for each GED subtest, so that’s four overall. They cost $7.99 each on the GED.com website, for a total of $32 in addition to the testing fees.
Free GED Ready Vouchers
If you learn for your GED with an Advantage Plan from Onsego, you will get four GED Ready tests for free. That’s part of your plan, a fine $32 value bonus.
Onsego Advantage Plans are already available at $79 for the 6-month option, and all Advantage Plans include multiple support courses, unlimited access to all the lessons from day 1, and the four free GED Ready vouchers.
Should we remove or list a location? Are adjustments required? Please inform us here.
