The Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education announced that the state covers the fees of the GED and HiSET tests. Check here for more details and to learn about promo codes.
What’s on the GED and HiSET
The GED consists of four separate tests that can be taken individually and in any desired order. These subtests cover the fields of
- English Language
- Social Studies
- Math
- Science
The HiSET has five tests, as Language comes with separate writing and reading tests. You may take the HiSET subtests separately as well.
Both exams measure proficiency at a level comparable to that of high school students upon graduation.
The GED is entirely computer-based, while the HiSET is offered in both computer- and paper-based versions.

Your Future
Every year, more than 10,000 applicants take the GED or HiSET exam in Massachusetts, and the five individual tests of the HiSET are in the subject fields of Language Arts Reading, Language Arts Writing, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics.
Candidates can take the HiSET test on a computer, by using paper and pencils, or in a format that combines these two, although not all schools are ready for computer testing yet, so contact your testing center.
In Massachusetts, the cost for the entire set of five tests is $100, and this includes two re-takes per subject.
The HiSET and GED exams (GED stands for General Education Development) are designed for adults who have never completed their high school education. Upon successful completion, students will receive a credential equivalent to a common high school diploma.
GED, HiSET Passing Scores
The GED test includes four individual subtests, or modules, in Language writing and reading (RLA-Reasoning through Language Arts), Math (Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies, and Science. Scoring is on a 100-200 scale. Below passing: 100-144; high school equivalency: 145-164; college-ready: 165-174; college-ready + credits: 175-200.
To pass the HiSET, you need to attain a score between 8 and 20 on each of the five tests. The essay section score must be between 2 and 6, and your overall score must be between 45 and 100, excluding your essay result.
Online GED and HiSET
It used to be that online GED or HiSET testing was not possible. Both tests needed to be dealt with at state-approved testing centers.
However, a few years ago, we saw the introduction of an online, proctored testing option for both the HiSET and the GED exams in many states, but in Massachusetts, the online exams are NOT available.
To read more about online ‘HiSET-At-Home’ testing, check out this post: ‘The online HiSET exam.’
To learn more about the online GED option, visit: ‘Introducing the online GED test.’
Qualification requirements for the online GED test include that you must first pass the GED Ready practice test.
Only when you have achieved ‘green’ scores on four GED subtests (one for each subtest) will you be able to complete the GED test online.
So that makes four GED Ready tests, which cost $7.99 each on the GED.com website, adding $32 to the total testing costs that apply in that state.
Free GED Ready Vouchers
Students learning toward their GED diploma with an Onsego Advantage Plan won’t need to purchase the GED Ready practice tests.
All Advantage Plans include four GED Ready test vouchers at no charge, a wonderful $32 value bonus, right?
These plans already start at $79 for Onsego’s 6-month option, including the free GED Ready Test Vouchers, full access to all the lessons and study materials from day one, highly effective support courses, and a lot more.
