Both the GED and HiSET can be taken online or at state-certified testing centers.

The exams give people who quit high school without graduating one more shot at acquiring an equivalent diploma.

Both exams measure proficiency at a level that is comparable to that of HS grads.

The GED® had four separate modules (subtests) in

  • Math
  • Science
  • English Language Arts
  • Social Studies

You may complete these modules one at a time and in the order you desire.

The HiSET® has five tests in Writing, Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies that can be taken separately as well.

The GED is completely computerized, while the HiSET is offered on paper and on a computer.

It used to be that online HSE (High School Equivalency) testing was not offered. The tests were only administered at official Massachusetts testing centers, but now, we’ve seen the arrival of both a HiSET and a GED online testing option. Read more at the bottom of this page.

If life’s twists and turns prevented you from graduating from high school, you have another option to earn a comparable degree. You have the chance to earn a High School Equivalency diploma on Martha’s Vineyard if you attend HiSET evening classes (once a week) to get ready for the exam. These classes are offered at the County Administration Building, Martha’s Vineyard Airport (across the street from the Hot Tin Roof).

All applicants aged 17 and over are welcome. The classes last around six weeks, and the actual examination is at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. The classes are available at a modest fee. When Massachusetts’ Department of Education discontinued its financial contribution for HiSET education on Martha’s Vineyard, the Dukes County Sheriff’s Office stepped in to fund the course, and if you want more information, you can call 508-645-3345.

Introducing Online GED and HiSET Testing Options

Taking the GED and HiSET exams online was never possible until recently. The tests needed to be taken exclusively at Massachusetts state-designated test centers. But recently, we’ve seen the introduction of new, online, proctored testing formats for the GED and HiSET exams.

If you want to learn more about the online ‘HiSET-At-Home’ testing option, check out: ‘The online HiSET test.’ For information about the GED online testing option, go to ‘Introducing the online GED test.’
