It doesn’t matter when you left school.
The assessments offer people who didn’t finish high school the chance to earn an equivalent degree.
High school equivalency testing takes place at a level that’s similar to that of a graduating HS senior.
The computer-based GED comes with four sub-exams covering a candidate’s academic knowledge of the subjects:
- Mathematics
- Language Arts
- Social Studies
- Science
You have the option to complete these modules (independent sub-exams) separately and in the order you want.
Online GED Classes
A simple and easy way of getting your GED diploma.
The HiSET exam includes five subtests in literacy reading, literacy writing, math, science, and social studies.
The HiSET is offered both on a computer and in a paper-and-pencil format, and the subtests can be taken separately, too.
Until recently, online HiSET or GED testing was not available. You needed to show up at an official Massachusetts testing center. But that has changed in many states with the introduction of the GED and HiSET online tests. However, Massachusetts has decided to cancel the online tests.

Introducing the Online HiSET and GED Exams
Taking the HiSET or GED exam online was not possible. The exams had to be dealt with exclusively at one of Massachusetts’ state-designated testing facilities. That had changed as online testing formats were introduced for both the GED and HiSET exams, but for now, Massachusetts has canceled online HiSET and GED testing.
You may, however, qualify for online testing in another state. More details about the new online ‘HiSET-At-Home’ option are found here: ‘Introducing the HiSET online,’ and for more details about online GED testing, check out: ‘Introducing the online GED.’
Passing Scores
The HiSET exam has five tests in these subject areas: Science, Social Studies, Math, Literacy Reading, and Literacy Writing. To pass the HiSET exam, you need a minimum score of 8 points (out of 20) on each individual subject, and in total, a score of no less than 45 is required, while for your essay, you must have at least a 2-score.
- The GED passing score is 145 (on a 100-200 scale) on each of the four GED subtests
- The HS equivalency score is 145-164
- If your results are in the 165-174 range, you have “college-ready” scores
- If your score is between 175 and 200, you’ll additionally receive up to college credits
The high school equivalency diploma will definitely lead to better job options, and it will open the doors to colleges and universities.
