GED, HiSET Essay Topics, Sample

Who is the HiSET exam for?

Iowa stopped using the GED program for the state’s HSE (high school equivalency) testing in early 2014 and changed to the HiSET exam. The GED is offered only in a computer-based format and became expensive. Reasons enough for Iowa to make the change. The IOWA HSE (high school equivalency) credential is accepted just like a regular HS diploma by virtually all U.S. employers and schools.

The High School Equivalency program is developed for adults who did not finish high school, and the diploma or certificate that is awarded after successful completion of the Iowa HiSET exam is all over the country accepted as equivalent to a regular high school diploma by employers, governmental institutions, and universities. When you want to get hold of your HiSET diploma, make sure to come and sit for the HiSET exam properly prepared. Preparation is key! You can take advantage of our HSE video lessons that are available at no cost or any obligation.

What is the HiSET exam?

The HiSET/GED exam is a set of five individual tests that, upon successful completion, will earn you the High school Equivalency Diploma. This credential allows for continued education at colleges and universities and gives you better career options and job advancement. In order to pass the HiSET exam you must attain a score of 8-20 on each of the five tests, score a 2 or higher on your essay, and have a total score of at least 45.

Why the HiSET?

Iowa decided to exchange the GED exam with the HiSET because the 2014 version of the GED exam is only available in a computer-formatted version and the price tag was getting too high. The HiSET exam is much more affordable and until 2016 offered in both a paper- and a computer-based format.

Can I take the HiSET-GED exam online?

No, you CANNOT take the HiSET or the GED exam over the internet. There are more and more fraudulent internet sites that tell you a different story, but they’re only after your money and the so-called certificates and diplomas that these diploma mills issue are not even worth the paper they’re printed on. If you want to earn your HSE diploma, you must come to a state-approved test site in person.

*) GED-i

Online learning as such is nothing new and a perfect way of learning for those in remote areas or who have no time to attend classroom settings at set times. The state of Iowa facilitates an online version of GED preparation named GED-i. Now that Iowa no longer uses the GED program for its high school equivalency testing and switched to the HiSET exam, it is still offering the service, and here we will still refer to it as the GED-i program.

The program enables applicants to prepare for the GED/HiSET diploma without having to leave their homes. Western Iowa Tech is offering this program that opens more opportunities to applicants for completing the GED/HiSET prep program and earn their diplomas.

Under the HiSET-i program, applicants don’t have to come to a study center at a specific time, but they can learn from the comfort of their home on their time schedule.

Applicants first will be assessed, and then they can sign up at no cost for the HiSET-i program that focuses on the five subject fields of the HiSET exam: math, reading, science, social studies, and writing. Students can participate in the program as long as they remain active and accomplish assignments.

For those who need assistance, face-to-face assistance remains available.
