The HiSET, like the GED®, assesses skills and knowledge at a level similar to what high school students must command at graduation.
There are five HiSET subtests covering these subjects:
- Language Reading
- Language Writing
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
Testing can be done on a computer or in a paper and pencil format.
In the past, online HiSET testing was never possible. The exam had to be taken at an Iowa-approved test center.

Introducing the Online HiSET Exam
In the past, taking the HiSET exam online was not possible. You had to appear, in person, at one of Iowa’s state-approved test facilities if you wished to get hold of your Iowa high school equivalency (HSE) diploma.
Now, with the introduction of the online HiSET-At-Home testing option, this has changed. A proctor sees online if everything goes in accordance with strict regulations. To learn more, check out The Online HiSET-At-Home Test.
