What’s on the HiSET and GED Tests

The GED has four independent subtests that may be completed one at a time and in any order. The testing subjects are:

  • Math
  • Science
  • English Language Literacy
  • Social Studies

The HiSET includes individual writing and reading tests, so five in total, that can be taken separately, too.

The HiSET exam is offered in paper-based and computer-based formats, while the GED is fully computerized.

Both assessments measure basic competencies and knowledge at a level that can be expected of graduating high school students.

Online HiSET And GED Testing

In the past, taking the HiSET or GED test online was not possible. To secure your North Carolina high school equivalency diploma, you had to show up in person at one of the state’s designated test centers.

Well, that changed some years back with the launch of the online proctored HiSET and GED tests.

To get informed about the online GED exam, check out this article: Welcoming the online GED test.

If you want to learn more about online HiSET testing, visit Introducing the online HiSET exam.

You can only take the GED exam online if you have reached passing (‘green’) results on the GED Ready practice test.

Each GED sub-exam has such a practice test, so that’s four, for a total of $32 ($7.99 each) in addition to the regular online testing fees.

Onsego Advantage students receive four GED-Ready Vouchers included in their plan, a nice $32 bonus.

You can already get one of Onsego’s Advantage Plans for $79, the six-month option. All Advantage Plans include unlimited access from the start, many extra courses for free, and four GED Ready Vouchers.

Should we remove or include a location? Are adjustments needed? Please inform us here.
