The tests give individuals who never graduated high school the chance to obtain an equivalent degree.
The HiSET exam is available on paper and on a computer, while the GED is offered exclusively on a computer. Both options measure academic proficiency at a level that compares to that of graduating HS seniors.
The GED exam has four subtests (modules) in
- Language Arts
- Social Studies
- Math
- Science
The subtests may be written separately and in the desired order.

GED and HiSET Online
Online GED or HiSET testing can now be done with the help of an online proctor who oversees if everything happens in line with the regulations. Until recently, there was no online HSE testing option. Your personal appearance at a state-certified testing center was needed.
Well, that has now changed with the arrival of the option to take the HiSET and GED in an online, proctored format. Learn more here: proctored online HiSET testing, and for the GED exam, check out the online proctored GED test.

GED and HiSET Passing Scores
The GED passing score is 145 on each of the four subject tests. GED scoring is measured on a scale that runs from 100 to 200.
The HiSET exam has five subtests that are graded on a 0-20 scale. The passing score on each HiSET sub-exam is 8, and your overall score must be at least 45. Additionally, your essay score needs to be no less than 2 out of 6.
You have the option to take the four GED subject tests or the five HiSET subtests individually.
