The GED and HiSET exams offer adults who left high school prematurely the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree.
HSE testing takes place at a level that compares to that of HS students upon graduation. The GED has four separate subtests (modules) that address:
- Science (including Chemistry & Physics)
- Mathematics
- English Language Arts
- Social Studies (including Biology and Geography)
These subtests may be taken one at a time and in any order.

Online GED and HiSET
Today, the HiSET and GED tests are available online as well. Until recently, that was not possible. Test-takers had to come to a state-approved test center and take the tests in person. Now, that has changed.
To qualify for taking the GED exam online, you have to attain “green” scores on the official GED Ready practice test. To learn all about taking the HiSET online, go to this article, ‘The online HiSET test,’ and for information about online GED testing, check out ‘The online proctored GED test.’
GED and HiSET
California decided to use two options for its HSE (high school equivalency) testing programs available to its residents: the HiSET and the GED. The HiSET is slightly cheaper than the GED and is offered in both paper- and computer-based formats, whereas the GED exam is only available on a computer.
The HiSET has two separate literacy tests (writing and reading), so five in total. Testing centers can decide which testing method(s) they use, so check with a testing site near you. All California testing centers <- can be found here.
Who Can Take the GED Exam?
The GED diploma is ideal for adults who, for several reasons, were not able to finish the 4 years of high school education. You can enroll in classes that are offered at your local community college and at some private facilities. Go through the list provided above and discover the GED classes that are being offered in your locality.
But if you are busy with family obligations and work-related tasks, you can benefit from online classes or study-at-home programs that offer you convenience. These options ensure that you don’t always rush from your place of work to school. You can study at your convenience when you are free from work and family-related obligations.
However, there is a word of advice – ensure that the online GED program in which you enroll is legitimate, like the GED-accredited online prep course developed by Onsego. Look at our review of free online GED classes, preparation books, and practice tests just to be on the safe side. These learning resources ensure that you get ready to take your GED tests successfully.
