Both tests can only be taken at certified Massachusetts testing facilities. There’s NO online testing option in the state.

NBABE offers the free Career Pathways Program to qualifying North Adams residents who sign up for the High School Equivalency Completion Program. Vouchers are available to compensate for testing fees, and one-on-one career coaching, college readiness, and employment training are also offered. The program is funded by the city of North Adams.
What’s on the GED and HiSET tests
The GED has four individual subtests that measure proficiency in these academic areas:
- Science
- Math
- English Language
- Social Studies
You can write these modules (separate sub-eams) one at a time and in your desired order.
There are five HiSET tests, covering English reading, English writing, science, social studies, and math, that may be taken separately as well.
The GED tests are fully computer-formatted, while the HiSET is offered both on paper and on a computer.

GED Scoring
The GED is scored on a 100-200 scale, where a score of 145 – 164 indicates high school equivalency, a 165 – 174 score indicates college readiness, and a 175 – 200 score will result in college credit as well.
The HiSET sub-exams are scored on a 0-20 scale, and the minimally required result is an 8-score. Overall, you must reach at least 45 points, and your essay must have at least 2 out of 6 points.
The GED program offers the possibility to register and pay for one of the four tests separately. The five HiSET subtests may also be taken one at a time.
GED and HiSET Online
In the past, it was not possible to take the GED or HiSET exam online. Both exams were offered only at state-designated, official test centers.
A few years ago, however, we saw the introduction of an online testing format for both exams. In Massachusetts, however, the exams must be taken at test centers.

You may perhaps qualify to take the GED exam online in a state without residency requirements.
It is good to note that in that case, you are required to first pass the GED Ready practice test by GED Testing Service.
Each GED subtest has a practice test, meaning you must pass four of these tests, which cost $7.99 each on the GED.com website, for a total of $32.
