What is on the GED and HiSET Exams

The GED consists of four separate subtests (modules) in math, social studies, science, and language arts (literacy).

The HiSET has five tests covering the academic subject areas of

  • Language Reading
  • Language Writing
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies

The GED and HiSET sub-exams are independent modules that can be taken separately, and in the order you prefer.

The GED is done exclusively on a computer, while the HiSET is available both on a computer and on paper.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced that the state covers the GED and HiSET testing fees. Check here for more details and to learn about promo codes.

*)  Frederick A. Abisi Adult Education Center

Lowell Adult Education Center was renamed the Frederick A. Abisi Adult Education Center a few years back. Fred was the organization’s first full-time Director, and he served the Lowell community in that position for more than 35 years.

Classes are available at the school’s main site (408 Merrimack Street). Morning classes are available, and evening classes are provided at Lowell High School. The school additionally offers prep classes at various satellite sites throughout Lowell.

The school has committed and experienced teachers who are well-trained to educate adult learners in a learning setting that can be described as comfortable.

All Lowell area residents 16 years or older qualify for these classes, provided they don’t already have a secondary degree and are not signed up for another school program. Those applicants 16 or 17 years old must be formally withdrawn from high school and present parental consent.

Online GED and HiSET Tests

It used to be that you could not take the HiSET or GED test via the Internet. High school equivalency testing needed to be done at one of Massachusetts’ state-designated test centers.

Well, that changed some years ago, as we saw the introduction of the online HiSET and GED exams. Note, however, that online testing is suspended in Massachusetts.

As mentioned above, perhaps you can take the test online in a state with no residency requirements.

Read more about the ‘HiSET-At-Home’ online test here: ‘HiSET exam online.’

For more information about the online GED test, visit: ‘The online GED test.’

To write the GED test online, you’ll first need to reach sufficient scores (in the ‘green’ zone) on the GED Ready practice test. That counts for each GED subtest, so you must pass four corresponding GED Ready tests.

Each GED Ready test costs $7.99 (available at GED.com), so that’s another $32 on top of the testing fees in your chosen state.

Free GED Ready Test Vouchers

If you study for your GED with an Advantage Plan from Onsego, there’s no need to purchase the GED Ready tests. All of Onsego’s Advantage Plans come with four free vouchers for the GED Ready tests, a fine $32 bonus!

These Advantage Plans are actually quite affordable, starting at just $79, an option that includes (besides more free extras), also the free GED Ready vouchers.
