The exams give individuals who never graduated high school the opportunity to obtain an equivalent degree.

The assessments measure knowledge at a level that compares to that of high school grads.

The GED® has four separate subtests (modules) in math, social studies, science, and literacy that can be taken separately.

The HiSET® has five tests in language reading, language writing, math, science, and social studies that can also be taken separately.

The GED is done exclusively on a computer, while the HiSET is available both on-computer and on-paper.

Until recently, online GED or HiSET testing was not available. But the introduction of both an online HiSET and GED testing possibility has changed all that. Learn more at the bottom of this page.

Introducing Online GED And HiSET Test-Taking Options

It used to be that you could not take the HiSET or GED test via the internet. High school equivalency testing needed to be done at one of Massachusetts’ state-designated test centers. Well, now that has changed as we saw the introduction of an online HiSET test-taking option (HiSET-At-Home Exam) and also an online option to take the GED test.

Read more about this new ‘HiSET-At-Home’ online testing format here: ‘HiSET exam now also available online,’ and for more information about the recently introduced online GED testing option, visit this article: ‘Introducing the online GED testing option.’

*)  Frederick A. Abisi Adult Education Center

Lowell Adult Education Center was renamed the Frederick A. Abisi Adult Education Center a few years back. Fred was the organization’s first full-time Director, and he served the Lowell community in that position for more than 35 years.

Classes are available at the school’s main site (408 Merrimack Street). Here are morning classes available, and evening classes are provided at Lowell High School. The school additionally offers prep classes at various satellite sites throughout Lowell.

The school has committed and experienced teachers that are well-trained to educate adult learners in a learning setting that can be described as comfortable.

All Lowell area residents 16 years or older qualify for these classes, provided they don’t already have a secondary degree and are not signed up for another school program. Those applicants 16 or 17 years old must be formally withdrawn from high school and present parental consent.
