The GED test measures knowledge at a level comparable to what high school students must command upon graduation.

New York State offered the TASC exam in the past years, but that exam was not continued. If you already passed portions of the TASC exam, you can transfer your scores to the GED exam!

The GED (General Education Development) exam comes with four independent sub-exams that cover the academic fields of

  • Math
  • Science
  • Language Arts (Reading and writing in 1 sub-exam)
  • Social Studies

New York State takes up the tab for GED testing, so the exam is, understandably, only open to state residents.

Is the NY GED Exam free?

Yes. For New York State residents, the GED exam is free, as are the GED practice tests available on this website. While most states let test-takers pay for the exam, New York State foots the bill for its residents, as state laws require the state to pay for high school equivalency testing. Three more states offer the High School Equivalency Exam at no charge, while several states partially subsidize GED testing.
