GED Classes Ithaca, New York

On this page, we list all GED® (TASC™ in New York State) prep sites and test centers in the Ithaca area. New York is using the TASC for its high school equivalency (HSE) testing.

The TASC measures knowledge at a level comparable to what high school students must command upon graduation.

The TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) has five tests in Math, Science, Writing, Reading, and Social Studies.

New York State takes up the tab for TASC testing, so the exam is, understandably, only open to state residents.

There is NO online TASC testing possibility. You must take the exam at a designated HSE (high school equivalency) testing site.

TASC /GED Essay Topic and Sample

Is the NY TASC exam free?

Yes, for New York State residents it is. While most states let test-takers pay for the exam, New York State foots the bill for its residents, as state laws require the state to pay for high school equivalency testing. Three more states offer the High School Equivalency Exam at no charge.

The plans to dump the GED in favor of a new high school equivalency exam started well before GED Testing Services (the developer of the GED program) revealed its intentions to upgrade the GED exam to bring it in line with the Common Core education standards.

GED Testing Services also announced it would eliminate paper-based exams and use computer-based testing only. And what’s more, the price of the GED exam would increase to $120 per exam, more than double the previous price.

Whereas most states continued to offer the new, more expensive GED exam, a few states opted for one of the two now available alternatives, the HiSET (by Educational Testing Service), and the TASC (created by publisher CTB/McGraw-Hill).

There are also a few states that give multiple exams. New York decided to go ahead with the TASC, a rigorous high school equivalency exam that includes five tests on reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies.
