In this article, we list all GED® (in New York: TASC) prep classes and testing centers in the Binghamton area.
New York State is using the TASC for its HSE (high school equivalency) testing program.
Testing takes place at a similar level as may be expected of graduating HS seniors.
The TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) has five subtests in math, science, writing, reading, and social studies.
The exam is available in both a paper-based and a computerized version.
To take the exam, you must appear at a state-approved testing site. There is NO online TASC or GED testing option.

What is the TASC exam?
A few years back, New York said goodbye to the GED for the purpose of high school equivalency testing and replaced it with the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion). The GED exam became too expensive and is only offered in a computer-based format. The TASC offers both paper-based and computer-based testing options. For eligibility details go to TASC in New York and check out also this link to all GED programs in the U.S.
The HSE program is developed to assist adults who never got their high school diploma in their efforts to obtain a comparable diploma. The certificate that is awarded after completing the New York TASC test is all across the country recognized as an equivalency to a regular high school diploma by state and federal agencies, employers and universities.
Is the TASC exam free?
Yes. The state of New York offers the High School Equivalency Exam (now the TASC) at no cost to state residents. There are various options available at no cost for adults wishing to develop or refresh their knowledge and skills required for successfully completing the New York State High School Equivalency exam, and receive their HSE diploma.
PBS Learning Media – TASC Connections
WSKG offers various on-air and online resources for Adult Education. You can tune into the program “TASC Connections” on Saturdays at 6:00 a.m. on WSKG TV, and there are many more resources. Besides GED Connections, you may be interested in these programs: Pre-TASC Connections, Workplace Essential Skills, or find the following programs interesting: TV 411, Lifelines, Madison Heights, Crossroads Cafe, and On Common Ground. You can watch programs online at www.FastForwardNY.org.
*) Step-Up program
The Step-Up program is provided together with Broome-Tioga Workforce (New York), the Cornell University/Cooperative Extension, and the Broome Co. Urban League. The program offers young adults in the age 18 – 21 education and tools they are going to need to become successful in the contemporary workplace.
The Step-Up program will furnish applicants with the knowledge and competencies they must have to continue their academic education and training to improve their employment opportunities. TASC prep classes are provided to support them in their efforts to pass the TASC exam and earn their NY High School Equivalency Diploma.
**) The American Civic Association
The American Civic Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping immigrants and refugees with their efforts to start a new life in the Binghamton community while promoting the preservation of their cultural heritage and ethnic diversity. In cooperation with Binghamton Adult Education, the American Civic Association presents ‘The World Of Work’, an educational program that aims to prepare refugees and ESL (English as a Second Language) students for employment opportunities in the USA.
The American Civic Association also offers free Adult Night TASC classes together with a Youth Study Skills Program for young individuals aged 5 to 14. You can turn Tuesday and Thursday nights into a great all-family learning experience: adult applicants follow GED or ESL (English as a Second Language) classes and in case you have children in school age, you can bring them along and they will be able to work with instructors and volunteers.
This way they can learn all the skills required to be successful at school. While you attend GED classes to get all set for the new TASC exam, will your children be able to complete their homework in small study groups and later they will be reviewing their accomplishments together with you by the end of class. For details please call the ACA at 607-763-4863.
