The Modular GED and HiSET Exams

Both exams measure proficiency at a level that compares to that of graduating high school seniors.

The GED exam is administered exclusively on a computer and has four separate, modular subtests assessing a student’s knowledge of

• Science
• Social Studies
• Math
• English Language Literacy

You don’t need to sit for the GED battery in one take. You can take the subtests separately and in any order.

The HiSET is offered both on paper and on a computer and consists of five tests, including separate Writing and Reading subtests in English Language Literacy.

Online Proctored GED and HiSET Testing

In earlier days, both the GED and HiSET exams had to be taken in person at one of Pennsylvania’s state-designated testing sites. Online testing was never an option.

A few years ago, however, that changed with the introduction of online testing options for both the HiSET and GED exams.

If you want to take the GED exam online, be aware that you’ll first have to qualify by achieving passing scores (‘green’ results) on the GED Ready practice test.
