The exam is for people who didn’t graduate high school and gives them a chance to earn an equivalent credential.

Over the years 2014-2021, New York offered the TASC exam for high school equivalency (HSE) testing, but this program was discontinued at the end of 2021. If you already reached passing scores on portions of the TASC, you can transfer these scores to the GED exam!

The GED exam measures knowledge at a level comparable to that of graduating high schoolers.

There are four GED (General Education Development) sub-exams that assess a student’s knowledge of these testing fields:

• Language Arts (Reading and Writing combined into one subtest)
• Mathematics
• Science
• Social studies

GED testing is free in New York State, but only for state residents. The GED assessment is fully computerized. Paper-based testing is something of the past.

Testing must be done at a state-designated testing site. There’s no online GED test available in New York. You can use this website’s free practice tests for the GED exam to identify your weak and strong points.
