This article shows all GED® (in New York: TASC) prep classes and testing sites in the Poughkeepsie region.

New York State is using the TASC for the purpose of high school equivalency (HSE) testing.

HSE testing is for people who didn’t graduate high school and gives them the chance to earn an equivalent credential.

The TASC measures knowledge at a level that is comparable to that of graduating high school seniors.

There are five TASC testing fields: Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science and Social studies.

HSE testing is free in New York State but only for state residents.

Testing must be done at a state-designated testing site, there is NO online TASC or GED testing option.

Can you be a nurse with a GED?

Why the TASC?

New York said goodbye to the GED a few years back as the GED exam was getting too expensive and only offered on a computer. Reasons enough for New York to welcome a different supplier of the state’s high school equivalency (HSE) test. So the state switched to the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion). Because the state subsidizes the cost of HSE testing for its residents, price played an important role in this decision. The New York State HSE diploma is all across America accepted in the same way as a standard high school diploma by practically all employers and colleges.

Is the TASC exam free?

As said before, in New York, YES! But if you are thinking about going for the TASC examination, be aware that the TASC exam can only be taken by you in person and only at an official TASC testing center. Go to TASC in New York for a list of approved testing sites and testing requirements in New York. So there is no fee to take the TASC set of five tests for New York State residents.

Can I take the TASC/GED exam online?what is HiSET

No, that’s impossible. The New York State Education Department is the only organization that is allowed to issue HSE (High School Equivalency) diplomas in the state of New York, and though there are internet sites that offer good online preparation programs, you cannot take the tests over the internet. Beware of fraudulent “diploma/certificate” issuing websites that claim differently. These documents are not legitimate and not even worth the paper they’re printed on.

Before you are going to enroll in online TASC prep courses why not benefit from the many NY State Education Department-approved courses at no cost at all. Just check out the listing above. Again, bear in mind, again, that the GED/TASC tests are not offered via the internet and that you have to appear in person at an official state-approved TASC/ GED testing center. Here is also a link to all U.S. GED programs and test centers.

Jobs with the GED-TASC diploma – The Military

When you would like to join the military but never graduated from high school, you may want to know that you have a chance to continue your education when you are on active military duty. But please understand that you must acquire your secondary education degree (HS or GED/TASC/HiSET diploma) before you are able to join the ranks.

Signing up for a branch of the military services is very competitive and you must meet specific expectations. The Army and the Navy both are welcoming persons who hold a high school equivalency diploma, and the Marine Corps is accepting applicants with a high school equivalency but they evaluate each individual case. Talk with your local recruiter from the Army, Navy or Marine Corps to learn how to file an application by the time you’ve earned your high school equivalency diploma.

So in New York, you can take the TASC examination on a computer or on paper. If you feel you are ready, schedule your test at one of New York’s test centers, and some centers are even situated near military bases. If you talk with recruiters, you can find out which branch will suit you best,  and once accepted, you have so many options to further your education.
