This post lists all GED (in Maine: HiSET) class sites and testing centers in the Portland, Maine, region. Maine uses the HiSET for its High School Equivalency testing program.

HiSET testing can be done online and at state-recognized test centers in many states, though, in Maine, the online exam is not offered.

The HiSET exam, in the same way as the GED test, offers adults who did not finish high school the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree.

There are students who do better if they learn under the guidance of a teacher, while others may get optimally prepared by using an inline prep course. The HiSET and GED exams have similar content, so you can very well use our resources for HiSET preparation.

The HiSET exam has five tests that assess a candidate’s knowledge in these subject areas:

• Language Arts Reading
• Language Arts Writing
• Mathematics
• Science
• Social Studies

The assessment can be taken both on a computer and on paper in most states that use the HiSET, but Maine offers only computer-based testing.

It used to be that the HiSET exam was not available via the Internet. You needed to appear in person at a Maine-approved testing center to sit for the test face-to-face, and this is still the case in Maine. The recent introduction of a new online test-taking option, however, has changed that in many states. Read more below.

The Maine high school equivalency diploma is accepted in the same way as a common high school diploma by employers and schools.

Introducing the Online HiSET Exam

Until recently, HiSET testing was not offered online, and it still is not in Maine. To earn your Maine high school equivalency diploma, your personal appearance at one of Maine’s state-designated HiSET testing centers was and is required. In many states, however, all of this has changed with the introduction of a new online proctored HiSET testing option. This online option is called the HiSET-At-Home Exam.

So in several states, you can also take the HiSET exam from your own home in an online format that uses a proctor to oversee your testing activities and who checks if you do it all according to some pretty strict regulations.
