Can I join the army with a GED?

Why the HiSET?

Louisiana has changed from the GED to the HiSET for high school equivalency (HSE) testing at the start of 2014. The GED is offered only on a computer and the price went up drastically. Reasons enough for the state to change to the HiSET exam. So Louisiana replaced the GED exam with the HiSET because the price tag of the GED exam was getting too high.

Apart from that is the latest version of the GED exam only available in a computer-based format, while the HiSET is offered in both paper and computerized versions. To pass the HiSET, applicants must attain a score of no less than 8 points (out of 20) on each of the five subject tests (literacy writing, literacy reading, social studies, math, and science), at least a 2-points score (out of 6) for their essay, and not below 45 points in total.

The HSE diploma will surely result in improved job options and qualifies for a college education. The HiSET, like the GED, cannot be taken online. The only way to take the HiSET exam is to go to a designated testing facility and take the exam in person.

The HiSET diploma

Adults who hold the GED or the HiSET diploma are sure to have the same skills and knowledge as the average high school student who has received his/her diploma. A HiSET/GED diploma makes certain the holder of the certificate is ready to take college or university courses. This has not always been the case in the past when students that enroll in post-high school education have found themselves under-qualified and had to drop out again.

The GED exam

Information on the GED exam: The GED exam was revamped a few years ago in an effort to bring it more in line with a 4-year high school diploma. You can take one GED subtest every time you feel all set to take that part, and you have two years to complete the entire examination. In the 70-year history of the GED, this was the largest overhaul to date.

People who pass the test will have proven themselves ready, willing and able to enter a vocational school, college, university or a job market where a high school education is a must. In January 2014, the extensive GED testing procedures went into effect. The major changes were the only ones that have been made since the minor tweaks of 2002. They have significantly raised the standards of the test to meet higher education requirements and to satisfy modern-day employers’ wishes.

The GED program is as close as it has ever been to an actual high school equivalency assessment. The test involves 4 sections: language arts, which is a combination of reading and writing; mathematics; social studies; and science.
