The assessments give people who quit high school prematurely the opportunity to earn a credential that’s across America accepted in lieu of a standard high school degree.

The HiSET and GED exams assess knowledge and skills at a level that compares to what high school students must command upon graduation.

The HiSET exam comes with five tests in these subject fields:

  • English Language Arts Writing
  • English Language Arts Reading
  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science

The GED exam contains four modules (independent subtests) as the English Language Arts Writing and Reading portions were merged into one ‘Reasoning through Language Arts’ exam.

HiSET testing can be done both on paper and on a computer, whereas the GED test is exclusively offered on a computer.

In the past, there was never an online HiSET or GED testing option. To earn your high school equivalency diploma, you were required to show up at a state-designated testing center and take the exam in person.

Recently, however, we witnessed the launch of new online HiSET and GED test-taking options, the ‘HiSET-At-Home’ exam, and the Online Proctored (‘OP’) exam. Learn more below.

When taking the GED or HiSET exam online, a proctor guides you through the online test-taking process and checks if everything happens in line with the rules and regulations.
