What’s on the GED and HiSET exams

The GED exam includes four modular subtests in the academic fields of

• Language Arts (Reading and Writing in one subtest)
• Social Studies
• Mathematics
• Science

The HiSET has separate reading and writing tests (so five in total) and is available in both paper and computer-based versions, whereas the GED exam is fully computerized.

All GED and HiSET subtests are independent modules that can be taken in any order you choose, and one at a time.

Both exams assess basic knowledge at a level similar to what high school students must command upon graduation.

The Online GED and HiSET Tests

In the past, there had never been an option to sit for the GED or HiSET exam in an online format. You had to report, in person, to a state-recognized official Tennessee test center.

However, this changed a few years ago with the advent of online proctored GED and HiSET exams.

To qualify for the online GED exam, you first must pass the official GED Ready test, and there’s one GED Ready test per GED subtest.

The GED Ready test can be purchased on GED.com for $7.99 each. So, that’s four GED Ready tests, totaling $32 on top of the Tennessee testing fees.
