Posted here is an overview of GED and HiSET prep locations and testing sites in the Cookeville region. In Tennessee, you must pass the GED or HiSET exam to earn your High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.
Both the HiSET and the GED exams can be taken online or at one of Tennessee’s official testing centers.
The exams are for individuals who never completed high school and give them the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree.
Testing takes place at a level comparable to what may be expected of high school seniors upon graduation.

Online GED Classes
A simple and easy way of getting your GED diploma.
The HiSET has five subtests covering
- English Language Literacy Writing
- English Language Literacy Reading
- Science
- Social Studies
- Math
The GED test has four separate sub-exams because here, the English Language Literacy Writing and Reading sections were combined in one Language sub-exam.
The HiSET sub-tests can be taken on paper or on a computer, one at a time if you prefer, and in any order. The GED modules must be taken on a computer. These sub-exams can also be taken one at a time and in any preferred order.

Your Future
The HSE (high school equivalency) program offers adults with no high school diploma the chance to earn a credential that compares to a regular high school degree.
The certificate that is awarded after completing the Tennessee GED (General Education Development) or HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) is accepted all over the United States by official institutions, colleges, and employers.
The GED exam is completely computer-formatted, whereas the HiSET can be done both on paper and on a computer.
On the HiSET exam, you need to attain at least a score of 8 (out of a possible 20) on all five individual subtests. Your essay must score between 2 and 6, and your overall score must be at least 45 (out of a possible 100), not including your essay.
The GED passing score on each of the four sub-exams is 145, and your scores are celebrated on a 100-200 scoring scale. Scores in the 145-164 range are considered high school equivalent; scores in the 165-174 range are “college-ready” results; scores in the 175-200 range may additionally result in up to 10 college credit hours in total, all depending on the subject area and the college or university.
