It doesn’t matter when you left school.

Both options can be taken online or at state-approved test centers.

The high school equivalency testing program offers adults who quit high school prematurely one more chance to get hold of an equivalent degree.

The GED® exam contains four separate tests in Literacy, Math, Social Studies, and Science. You have the option to deal with the four GED subtests one at a time.

The HiSET® comes with five tests (the literacy part has separate writing and reading tests) that can be done separately, too.

It used to be that if you wanted to sit for the GED or HiSET exam, you needed to come, in person, to one of Pennsylvania’s official testing facilities.

This has changed now, however, with the arrival of the online proctored HiSET and GED tests. To learn more, check below at the bottom of this page.

Welcoming Online GED And HiSET Options

In the past, to sit for the Pennsylvania GED or HiSET exam, you had to go in person to an official state-designated HSE testing facility. Online testing was never an option. That’s changed, however, with the launch of online proctored HiSET and GED options.

For more information about the newly launched HiSET online test, check out this article: ‘The online HiSET exam,’ and for information about the new GED online test-taking option, visit ‘The online proctored GED exam.’
