The tests offer individuals who didn’t graduate high school another option to earn an equivalent degree.

Testing occurs at a similar level as what HS students must know upon graduation.

The GED® is only offered on a computer, and the HiSET® is available in both a paper-based and a computer version.

The GED contains four separate modules, or subtests, in Literacy, Social Studies, Math, and Science that may be completed one test at a time.

The HiSET exam includes two Literacy tests (one in Reading and one in Writing), so five in total that can also be taken separately.

Introducing Online Proctored HiSET And GED Exams

In the past, GED and HiSET testing could not be done via the Internet. You were required to come, in person, to one of Pennsylvania’s state-designated official HSE (High School Equivalency) testing centers. But recently, all of that changed as we witnessed the introduction of new online HiSET and GED exams.

For more detailed information on the recently launched online HiSET test, visit ‘Introducing the online proctored HiSET exam,’ and if you want to learn more about the online proctored GED testing option, check out ‘Welcoming the online proctored GED test.’

GED And HiSET Scoring

The passing score on each of the four GED tests is 145, and scoring is done on a 100 to 200 scale. So below-passing score: 100-144. Three passing performance levels are possible.

  • If you score in the 145-164 range, you attain a GED passing score at the high school equivalency level
  • Scores in the 165-174 range indicate you are college-ready
  • Scores between 175-200 are college-ready + credit scores

To pass the HiSET exam, you must attain a score of at least 8 (on a scale that runs to 20) on each of the five HiSET subtests. Your score on the essay section needs to be in the 2 to 6 range, and your overall testing result must be between 45 and 100 points.

Prepare Well

When you think about getting your HiSET or GED diploma, keep in mind that preparation is crucial, and people who invest time in preparing for their exams generally do much better than those who don’t. They really increase the odds of being successful on the first try.

Research indicates that test-takers who were well-prepared and had taken a practice test were way more likely to successfully take the entire set of four tests (GED) or five tests (HiSET) than any other group of applicants.
