Converting Percentages to Decimals and Fractions

The methods for converting a percentage to a decimal and a fraction are fairly straightforward. Let’s look at some examples.

First, we have 68%. To convert a percent to a decimal, all you have to do is move the decimal point two places to the left. So, for instance, 68% is equal to 0.68.

To convert a percentage to a fraction, all you have to do is write the percentage as the numerator of a fraction, with the denominator of 100. So, we have 68%, so 68, the numerator, over 100. And we can reduce this fraction by dividing top and bottom by 4. 68/4 is 17, 100/4 is 25. So, 68% is equal to 17/25.

Next example, we have 13.7%, and, once again, we can find the decimal equivalent by moving the decimal point two places to the left, so 13.7% is equal to 0.137.

Now, to convert this to a fraction, we can do the same thing we did over here with the 68%, but we have a decimal point in the percentage. So, if we write 13.7/100, we have a decimal in our numerator. We can eliminate that decimal by multiplying top and bottom by 10, that will change 13.7 to 137, and we’ll add a zero to the bottom. So, we have 137/1000.

In the final example, we have 58.6%, and as before, to change to a decimal, all we have to do is move the decimal point two places to the left. So, we have 58.6% is equal to 0.586.

And to convert this to a fraction now, we have to do the same thing we did over here. We can write 58.6/100, but then, we have to multiply top and bottom by 10 to eliminate the decimal point, that gives 586/1000, but we can reduce this fraction also. So, we’ll divide top and bottom by 2, 586/2 is the same as 293, and 1000/2 is the same as 500, so this percentage is also equivalent to 293/500.
